Santa Baby

When we were in AZ, I was admiring Lana's collection of pictures of Santa with her kids. One for each year. So I decided to see if I could find one of my kids each year. Here's what I found:

2010-we went to see Santa with our cousins, and he was on an extended break. We waited around, but it got too late, so we just took a pic in his big chair. :(

A Break

Jeff and I took a much needed vacay from the kids last week. Chris (Jeff's brother) and Sheri had found an amazing deal at our favorite Canyon Villas in Scottsdale and invited us to tag along. It didn't take much convincing. We left Friday morning, and thanks to four lovely ladies, we had our kids taken care of until Tuesday night.

What a fantastic treat! We basically could do anything we wanted, whenever we wanted. And that's exactly what we did. We spent the first two nights with 259; first with couples, and then with families. We had a LOT of laughs (and a few squeezes too) and the boys even performed a little "concert" of sorts and McKane and Emily's brand new gorgeous home. How long had it been since we heard the rap at the end of "Jericho" or "Kiss the Girl?" For a 259 groupie such as myself, it brought back a lot of memories. And I sure love those guys and the awesome ladies they talked into marrying them (sadly, I have no pictures. I couldn't find my phone when it was time to go, so I didn't have it for the whole weekend).

We also ate a lot of yummy food (had a delicious dinner on Sunday at Porter and Lana's house) and went to three different movies. We hung out in the hot tub, went to bed whenever we wanted and slept through the night in silence. Amazing!

The rest of our time we basically spent at Last Chance (the Nordstrom clearance/return center, where everything has one final chance to be purchased). It's like a Nordstrom yard sale. A lot of the stuff you find is brand new, but other stuff is used and not in great condition. And you really have to be willing to put in the time to find the deals. It also helps to have Chris and Sheri there, because they actually know what brands are expensive and helped us find them. Jeff and I have no clue.

We also spent a lot of our time at Zupas, enjoying the Mango Berry Salad. Zupas was right by Last Chance, which made it easy for us to shop for a few hours, go eat lunch close by and then go to a movie or whatever else we wanted. Seriously, it was so relaxing.

Here's a look at most of our haul (this was Monday night, before we scored a bunch of stuff on Tuesday, mostly for Jeff). 7 for all Mankind jeans (apparently that's good), Citizens of Humanity jeans (also good I hear), Pumas, Nikes, Asics, Skechers, Toms, Nordstrom boots...yeah, we scored.

And here's Jeff showing off his North Face jacket and Nike Frees, which we picked up on Tuesday morning. The Nike duffel bag he is standing on was also a Last Chance purchase, desperately needed so we could take all of our stuff home on the plane. We stuffed it full!

It was a perfect vacation. We had no cares, and the days flew by. But of course, we had to come home eventually to see what had become of our little ones. And, poor babysitter, they had endured a trial. Bex, our new pup, had somehow gotten to the only binkies Carter had left and chewed the nipples clean off. And so Carter had been something of a beast when it came time to sleep.

We had been telling him that when he turns three (Jan 29) he will be giving up his binkies. Frankly, I didn't want to deal with it until then. He is going to be moving into a new bedroom and I thought we should wait until after the holidays at least until we went through the torture of binky-detox. But Bex made the decision for us. Now is the time to give up the binkies.

And it has been miserable for all of us. Not only has Carter basically refused taking naps, but he throws a complete fit when it's time for bed. If I had a binky, I promise I would have given him one several times. The worst, though, was at 12:30 am this morning. He woke up in hysterics, crying for his binky. I went and reminded him that we didn't have any more and he threw the biggest fit I have ever seen from him. He laid on the floor, kicking and screaming so much that I thought for sure this morning he would be hoarse. It was awful. And it went on for over an hour. I would lock him in his room (so that he couldn't stand outside our door screaming) and he'd start banging and kicking the door. Then Jeff or I would have to threaten him with a spanking if he continued that behavior. He would scream that he didn't want to go to bed, we'd put him back in bed, and the cycle would start again.

After about 30 minutes of this, the dog woke up and she wasn't happy at all. She started barking louder than Carter was crying. And the two of them continued to duel for another 30 minutes (could have been longer, but I put earplugs in at 1:30). Welcome home mom and dad. Welcome to your nightmare.

Kyla's a photog

Clearly she needs a few lessons on picture taking. But it made me smile to see what she was up to while I was in the shower.

November Laughs

I wasn't very good at writing down the funny things in November, so I can only remember a couple.

Kyla discovered q-tips and stuck one in each ear. She came out of the bathroom and announced, "Look at my ear nogs!"

We got out our Little People Nativity set, which the kids love to play with. Damon was looking for a candle, and Carter told him he knew where it was. He took him into the Nativity and handed him a camel.

Kyla doesn't like to wear her seatbelt. Ever. One day we were driving and Allie noticed that she wasn't wearing it. "Kyla isn't wearing her seatbelt!," she told me. "She needs a coincidence."

Jeff's jelly beans were disappearing from his office and he was asking the kids about it one night at dinner. Carter (who was most likely one of the guilty parties) started blaming everyone else, including Damon. Damon denied it, saying he had been at school when they had gone missing. Good enough evidence to convince Carter, he made his judgment, "Okay, dad ate them all." We laughed and laughed about that.

Bex

We have always known we were going to get a dog. Eventually. Jeff and I both grew up with dogs, and we both loved them. In fact, we got fairly close to getting a dog once when we lived in Columbus. We were thinking of getting a Cairn Terrier (like Toto in Wizard of Oz) or an Australian Terrier. But just as we were getting serious, I had Allie, and I was suddenly overwhelmed with the fact that I was going to have to take care of Damon, a newborn, AND a dog. So we didn't get one.

We did a lot of research, though, and had many discussions about what dog would be right for us. We really wanted a bulldog, but they have lots of health problems. We liked french bulldogs, too, but they also have a few health problems. So we did nothing.

Jeff's parents had a dog named Ricky who died a couple years ago. Kyla told us one day that she was glad she could see Ricky again in heaven. And that started us both thinking. The kids were getting older and deserved to have a dog. And we were starting to get to a place in our lives where it might be manageable. And so we started looking again.

We quickly realized that in northern Utah, we needed to have an indoor dog. It's just too cold outside in the winter to force a dog to live outdoors. And that meant we needed to have a dog that didn't shed. I have been to homes where dog hair is everywhere and I just couldn't have that be my home. We thought about a shitzu, but they aren't always good with kids. And then our neighbors got a mini schnauzer and we fell in love with her.

They may not be the most adorable dogs in the world, but they only get to be about 15 pounds, they don't shed, they are super smart and they are great with kids. And so we started really considering it. We also considered a Havanese, but they are 3-4 times the price and really aren't any cuter. So. Decision made.

The breeder in Taylorsville had another litter just about ready to go. And we went. And we picked one. And now she is ours.

Aside from that funky haircut (really? That's supposed to be a good look?), we have had very few complaints. We picked her up on Monday night and she has been such a fun little pup. She's had a few accidents in the house, but most of the time she does her business outside. She is playful and fun, but can also spend hours a day being completely mellow, almost like a lap dog.

Naming her was quite the process. Jeff and I should have followed our pattern for naming kids, and just picked one. But we gave everyone a vote, and no one could agree. Names that were considered were: Shadow, Midnight, Olive, Oreo and Dottie. We thought we had agreed on Oreo, but a three-syllable name is often hard to say. And so someone suggested Bexley. That has always been a name I loved ever since we lived in Columbus, but I just couldn't see my daughter (Allie) as a Bexley. But Bex for a dog sounded good. And the kids went for it!

McKay has been a little needy. He's been sick, but I think he's also been a little jealous of the attention I have been giving to the dog. He wouldn't be in this pic without me, crazy kid.

We are crate training her, so she sleeps in a crate at night and nap time,  and I put her in every time we leave the house. She doesn't love it, and often cries, but never very long. She wakes up early (5 or 6 am) and I have been taking her out to go potty and putting her back in. That hopefully will change as she gets older and gets used to our schedule.

I have heard that having a puppy is like having a newborn, and I can honestly say it's not that bad. Yes, it's more work, and yes it's a little inconvenient at times. But who could ever leave a newborn in a crate all night long? And the kids love her. Especially Kyla and Carter. Kyla takes care of her all morning long and Carter got up with her this morning at 6:00 to play.

This was last night when Carter asked her if she wanted to dance. She didn't, but she's a good sport.  So far, so good. Hopefully we made the right choice and she will be a great addition to our family!

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving was fabulous. Spent with the people I love the most. Usually we do a big dinner with my mom's family in Las Vegas, but we have known for some time that it was getting TOO big and that eventually we'd have to branch out and do our own thing. This was the year.

Heather and her family came from AZ and we had a nonstop party for days. Movies, temple sealings, games, FOOD, four square, gorgeous weather and a bounce house. Couldn't ask for more. Here are some of our family pics:

Love these two

Cheesy, but still cute

Plenty of food (and rainbow jello)! Look at Heather's yummy rolls. Nice work!

This was the "small" Thanksgiving. 24 of us. There were 19 more in Vegas. Yeah, it had gotten a bit out of hand!

Allie led a couple of the cousins in a group dance. They walked up and down this cement wall doing all sorts of fancy choreography. Allie is wearing hand-me-downs from our cousin in LV. It was too funny and we couldn't stop watching!
